Millicent Scarlett, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, continues to display her musical artistry with “a powerful and juicy voice” performing on concert stages throughout Canada and the USA. She has been the winner of many awards, most notably The Luciano Pavarotti International Competition, and National Semi-Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera. She currently is an Adjunct Professor and Facilitator of Voice at George Washington University, Voice Teacher for the Washington National Opera’s Institute, Director of Music at University United Methodist Church in College Park, MD, and was a Visiting Instructor at Shenandoah University.
Still a frequent performer, Millicent continues to share her sublime and beautifully suggestive voice with audiences in both the classical and musical theater genres. She joined the cast of a new musical entitled, 19, in the role of Ida B Wells, which had its World Premiere at the Women’s National Museum of Art in Washington DC, and revised her role for an audio book version on Audible. She participated in a studio recording of a new musical When We Get There by Charlie Barnett.
Millicent is one of the resident musicians with the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company and has appeared in a number of their productions. A Tribute to Marian Anderson and Surroundings: A Tribute to Maya Lin at The National Portrait Gallery; A Tribute to Marian Anderson, Alvin Ailey Dance Theater; 30th Anniversary Celebration, and 10,000 Dreams at the Kennedy Center and performances at The Arts Club of Washington and Hillwood Estate, Museum and Garden.
Most recent performances include , The Sky’s the Limit, with the Columbia Orchestra; soloist on Gwyneth Walker’s A Heart in Hiding at The National Cathedral, and soprano soloist in Verdi’s Requiem at Strathmore with the Choral Arts Society of Washington; Messiah Sing- A- Long at the Kennedy Center; In Plain Sight, the Art Songs of African American Woman Composers in Winnipeg Manitoba; Jubilate Hunt Country Music Festival in Middleburg, VA
Other notable performances : Strauss’ Last Four Songs and Beethoven’s Ninth with the NIH Philharmonia under the baton of Maestra Nancia D’ Alimonte; Veterans Day Concert at the Washington National Cathedral with The President Own Marine Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Lt. Col. Jason Fettig and God’s Gonna Trouble the Waters, a concert celebrating the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) at the National Cathedral; solo recitals at the historic Arts Club of Washington.
Millicent is known in the Washington DC area for her rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. She has performed it on The National Mall, and at The National Building Museum, The National Museum of American History and most recently The National Archives. Millicent was honored to sing the National Anthem at the historic Swearing in Ceremony of the new Archivist Dr. Colleen Shogan and then to be invited back to sing America the Beautiful at the Annual Reading to the Declaration of Independence on July 4th.
Millicent is currently preparing for upcoming performances in the US and Canada, and is looking forward to spreading her love , joy and appreciation for this art form that has given her so much to the masses.
